Mirafiori Design Centre

Part of the transformation of the former Fiat Mirafiori industrial district in Turin, the project converts the disused “ex-DAI” factory hangar into a new Design Centre for the Politecnico di Torino, integrating teaching spaces with laboratories for experimentation and production.

The intervention preserves the original steel structure and portions of the metal roof, retaining the monumental scale of the former factory while establishing continuity with the site’s industrial memory. Painted in red, the existing framework becomes both a visible trace of the past and a climatic device providing shade for the new campus below.

Within this structure, a series of two-level pavilions clad in different materials, wood, metal and stone, form a network of academic spaces connected by gardens and covered walkways. The project constructs a contemporary educational environment within the vestiges of Mirafiori’s industrial landscape.
