Set within the historic Ex Unione Militare building in the centre of Rome, the project explores the relationship between the permanence of historic architecture and the precision of contemporary intervention.

A vertical steel and glass lantern is inserted at the heart of the building, reconnecting the different floors and restoring spatial continuity across the interior. Rising through the existing structure, the new element culminates in a transparent dome that introduces natural light deep into the building while establishing a new architectural presence within the historic fabric.

The intervention does not seek to compete with the building’s heritage, but rather to clarify it, using a restrained contemporary language to organise circulation, light and spatial hierarchy within the existing structure. Emerging above the roofline, the amorphous glass dome adds a subtle new layer to the skyline of Rome, contributing to the long architectural stratification that has shaped the city’s millennial urban landscape.
